When I forge a blade, I taper the blade from the “riccaso”, that area just ahead of the handle, to the tip. This is called “distal taper”. I also taper the tang from the riccaso back into the handle on both full tang and stick tang knives. When the knife is finished, this gives the knife a graceful appearance and a light feel of balance in the hand.
Sheaths: I make my own leather sheaths for my knives, hand tooling and stamping them. I install a leather “welt” inside the sheath to encase the blade. This prevents the blade from cutting the stitches which hold the sheath together. I also shrink the sheath to fit each knife, this helps to prevent injury and loss by making a tight fit.
